It is with deep sorrow that we share the heartbreaking news of the unexpected passing of Helen Ryde on Tuesday morning, September 2nd, in their home.
For 13 years, Helen dedicated their life to the work of LGBTQ+ justice and inclusion in The United Methodist Church and beyond through RMN. As an Organizer, Helen brought not only a steadfast faith in God’s transformative power but also the courage, authenticity, and compassion needed to walk alongside others in that work.
Helen had a rare gift: the ability to embrace people in all their multitudes. They stood with those marginalized by oppression, offering friendship, solidarity, and a courageous witness. Their persistence and generosity bore fruit at the 2024 General Conference, where, as a delegate and co-convener of the Queer Delegate Caucus, Helen played a pivotal role in shaping a more inclusive church. Their leadership extended further, serving as Secretary for the General Board of Church & Society and on the Racial Audit team of the Methodist Federation for Social Action.
Helen’s impact was not only in the church’s halls of decision-making but also in the small, everyday moments – reminding us to find joy, practice kindness, and embrace difference.
We hold in prayer Helen’s beloved wife, Kate (“Mrs. Lovely”), their partner of over 25 years, along with Helen’s mother, sister, nieces, and extended family. We also lift up all who were touched by Helen’s faith, humor, and unwavering commitment to justice.
Helen’s journey reminds us that the Way is not about a final destination, but about walking it with grace, courage, and love. Their footprints will remain with us on the road ahead.
