WOODINVILLE, Wash. — A Woodinville neighborhood is reeling after authorities confirmed the deaths of David L. May, 62, and his wife, Sontaya May, 52, in what investigators are calling a murder-suicide.
Deputies with the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the couple’s home on 102nd Avenue Southeast Wednesday for a welfare check. Inside, they found both David and Sontaya dead. Officials said no additional individuals were involved and emphasized that there is no danger to the public.
The Mays had been married for nearly two decades and were described by neighbors as warm but reserved. “It’s just heartbreaking,” one neighbor said. “You never expect something like this to happen so close to home.”
Sontaya, originally from Bangkok, Thailand, built an accomplished career with Zurich Insurance after pursuing her education at Pacific Lutheran University and schools across the U.S. and abroad. Friends and colleagues are remembering her as compassionate, hardworking, and kind.
The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to confirm the official cause of death in the coming days. Meanwhile, investigators continue piecing together what led to the tragedy.
Authorities encourage anyone facing mental health struggles or domestic challenges to reach out for help. The Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (988) and the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233) are available 24/7.
