Suspects Arrested in State Highway Patrol Shooting Incident

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. — Authorities have arrested two suspects in connection with a member-involved shooting on I-295 that occurred on September 2.

Around 8:22 p.m., a State Highway Patrol member attempted to stop a Dodge Caliber for a speeding violation. The vehicle refused to stop, prompting a pursuit. During the chase, a male passenger fired multiple gunshots at the pursuing patrol member, disabling the patrol vehicle and forcing the pursuit to end. The suspect vehicle exited I-295 onto McArthur Road and was last seen traveling east.

On September 3, law enforcement arrested Jumar Lavelle Moore, 21, of Fayetteville, identified as the passenger who fired the shots. Moore was located in Spring Lake and is charged with multiple offenses including felony assault with a deadly weapon, assault on a law enforcement officer, felony conspiracy, and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was held at the Cumberland County Detention Center without bond.

Earlier the same day, Destiny Mahkia Williamson, 19, of Fayetteville, the driver of the suspect vehicle, was also arrested. She faces charges including fleeing to elude arrest, conspiracy, assault on a law enforcement officer, reckless driving, and driving without a license or insurance. Williamson is also being held without bond.

Colonel Freddy L. Johnson, Jr., commander of the State Highway Patrol, praised the coordinated efforts of multiple law enforcement agencies, saying, “Their collaboration not only helped identify the suspects but ensured they were taken into custody safely, highlighting the dangers our members face while carrying out their mission.”
