Driver Killed After Vehicle Submerges in Creek on I-85 in Troup County

Troup County, GA – A Hamilton man has died following a crash that left his vehicle submerged in water along Interstate 85 early Thursday, September 4, 2025.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, the crash happened on I-85 South near mile marker 26, just south of Hogansville. Investigators say a grey GMC Sierra HD was traveling south in the left lane when it entered the median and struck the guardrail. The vehicle then hit an embankment and several trees before coming to rest submerged in a creek below the interstate.

The driver, identified as 48-year-old Cleveland “Clarke” Stallings of Hamilton, was pronounced dead at the scene by Troup County Coroner Erin Hackley.

Both directions of I-85 were temporarily closed while emergency crews responded, but the roadway has since reopened. The Georgia State Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the crash.
