Because of Him, She’s Alive”: Springville Man Dies Shielding Wife From DUI Suspect’s Truck

SPRINGVILLE, Utah — Police say the man accused of driving drunk and killing a pedestrian in Springville on Wednesday had more than six times the legal limit of alcohol in his system at the time of the crash.

According to arrest documents, 42-year-old Travis McIntyre faces multiple charges, including automobile homicide and DUI, following the fatal collision.

Officers were called to 400 South Main Street at 6:39 p.m. after reports that a pedestrian had been struck. They arrived to find a Chevrolet Silverado stopped on the sidewalk with a man pinned underneath the front passenger side. The driver, identified as McIntyre, was still behind the wheel.

The victim, 36-year-old Matthew Daines, was pulled from beneath the vehicle and given life-saving measures but later died at the hospital. Witnesses told police Daines acted heroically, pushing his wife out of the truck’s path before being struck. She suffered lacerations but survived.

“Because of him, he took the full force of the truck coming their way and saved her life,” Springville Officer Van Pelt said.

Daines’ family released a statement expressing grief but urging against retaliation: “No words can adequately express our sense of loss at the sudden and unexpected death of our son. In our profoundly deep sorrow, we encourage no sense of retribution.”

Witnesses reported seeing McIntyre blocking traffic before the crash, appearing disoriented, and later swerving between lanes and sideswiping another vehicle. After the collision, bystanders said he appeared “very out of it” and smelled strongly of alcohol. Officers discovered open containers inside his truck.

A field sobriety test showed McIntyre was unable to stand. His breath test registered a 0.307 BAC—Utah’s legal limit is 0.05. Tests also showed the presence of THC and other alcohol markers. Blood test results are still pending.

McIntyre is being held without bail as the investigation continues.
