RUSTON, La. – The Ruston Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Thursday, September 4, 2025, at approximately 11:50 p.m. at the USA Travel Plaza convenience store on 2500 West Alabama Avenue.
Upon arrival, officers discovered 35-year-old Ontario Spivey of Ruston deceased at the scene. The area was secured, and investigators began processing evidence. Surveillance footage quickly identified the suspect and the suspect’s vehicle. A Grambling City Police officer on scene helped identify the suspect as 31-year-old Virgil Mack Jr. of Dubach, Louisiana, prompting a “Be on the Lookout” alert to surrounding law enforcement agencies.
Using license plate reader technology, officers tracked Mack Jr.’s escape route westbound on Interstate 20. Louisiana State Police Troop G attempted a traffic stop, which led to a pursuit into Texas. The suspect vehicle ultimately crashed in Marshall, Texas, where Mack Jr. was taken into custody along with 37-year-old Kourtney Douglass of Ruston and 20-year-old Kobe Mack of Dubach.
Ruston Police Chief Eric Watson praised the coordinated effort, noting, “This is the kind of outcome the public should expect when agencies work together.” Agencies involved included Grambling Police, Louisiana Tech University Police Department, and Louisiana State Police Troops F and G.
The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
