Driver Killed in Rollover Crash on Casey Highway; Dog Reported Missing

CARBONDALE TWP., LACKAWANNA COUNTY — State police have released details about a rollover crash on the Casey Highway that claimed the life of a Carbondale man Thursday evening.

The crash happened on September 4, around 5:30 p.m., near the Meredith Street exit ramp by mile marker 12. According to investigators, several witnesses reported seeing the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed while passing other cars.

Troopers say the driver, identified as 35-year-old Michael Propes, abruptly turned right, causing his vehicle to lose control. The car veered off the shoulder, struck a light post and then a concrete base before overturning and coming to rest on its roof.

Propes was ejected from the vehicle and rushed to Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton, where he was later pronounced dead.

Lackawanna County Coroner Timothy Rowland noted that Propes had been traveling with his white pit bull puppy, named Storm. The dog was last seen on an embankment near the Meredith Street off-ramp, but its current whereabouts remain unknown.

Pennsylvania State Police continue to investigate the crash.
