A 27-year-old Hector Julian Zavala Montero has been identified as the victim of a deadly crash that shut down Big Spring Street for several hours early Friday morning in Midland.
The Midland Police Department reported that the accident occurred at approximately 1:55 a.m. on Sept. 5 in the 4400 block of North Big Spring Street near Loop 250.
Investigators say a 2024 GMC pickup, driven by a Midland man, was traveling northbound at a high rate of speed when it drifted into the southbound lanes. The truck struck a 2007 Mercury Milan head-on before overturning.
The driver of the Mercury, identified as Hector Julian Zavala Montero, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the GMC sustained serious injuries and was transported to Midland Memorial Hospital.
According to police, alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the crash, and charges against the GMC driver are pending.
The wreck forced the closure of Big Spring Street in both directions for several hours. The roadway reopened around 9:30 a.m. after police completed their investigation at the scene.
