PORT HURON, Mich — A homicide investigation is underway in Port Huron after a 23-year-old man was shot and killed Wednesday in his home, allegedly by his girlfriend, while her 11-year-old child was present.
Authorities identified the victim as Chase Hunter Hoyt, who was killed on the 1400 block of 10th Avenue. His girlfriend, 40-year-old Jennifer Goodall, has been charged with open murder, felony firearm possession, and purchasing a pistol without a license. Goodall was taken into custody the night of the homicide and arraigned Friday at 72nd District Court. She received a $500,000 cash/surety bond.
Speaking about their son, Chase’s stepfather Bill Herman said, “It’s just stupid. It shouldn’t have happened… Taking a 23-year-old’s life, and he’s gone, for no reason. He just got a car, just got a job.”
Chase’s mother, Serena Herman, described her son as a dedicated pool player and a level-headed young man. “He always assured me that everything would be okay; he was just like a rock,” she said through tears.
The Hermans expressed concerns about the nearly two-decade age gap between Chase and Goodall, noting that he met her when he was around 20 years old.
Police confirmed Goodall’s 11-year-old child was in the home during the incident. The motive for the shooting remains unclear.
Chase’s family hopes his story sheds light on domestic violence, particularly its impact on men. Goodall is scheduled to appear in court for a probable cause conference on September 16 before Judge Mona Armstrong. Meanwhile, a fundraiser has been set up to help with funeral expenses and to honor Chase’s passion for pool.
