WESTBROOK, Conn. — Two people were killed in separate crashes on Interstate 95 in Westbrook Friday morning, according to Connecticut State Police.
The first crash occurred around 7:42 a.m. on I-95 South near Exit 64 when a tractor-trailer overturned, spilling loads of plywood across both sides of the highway. Troopers said 39-year-old Nicholas Kupec, of Waterford, sustained serious injuries and was transported to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Three additional people were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Just under two hours later, around 9:27 a.m., troopers responded to another serious crash on I-95 South near Exit 65. Investigators said a car collided with a tractor-trailer, killing 22-year-old Isabella Butzgy, of Montville. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Both directions of I-95 were closed for several hours as emergency crews and investigators worked the crash scenes, but all lanes have since reopened. The Route 145 overpass between Glenwood Road and North High Street was also shut down after being damaged by the first crash. The Connecticut Department of Transportation later confirmed the bridge is safe for travel, though repairs will be required.
Both incidents remain under investigation. Anyone with information is urged to contact Troop F at 860-399-2100.
