MILWAUKEE — A tragic crash Friday evening claimed the lives of two Marquette University students and left several others injured, according to Milwaukee police.
The crash happened around 5 p.m. at the intersection of 27th and St. Paul. Investigators say a 41-year-old driver struck a vehicle carrying six people. Two passengers, ages 19 and 20, were pronounced dead at the scene. The remaining four occupants, including two Marquette students, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were treated at the scene and at local hospitals.
The driver responsible for the crash was taken into custody. The Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office is currently reviewing charges.
Witnesses described hearing the sound of a speeding vehicle followed by a loud “boom.” One bystander said he saw responders attempting CPR on a victim, but they were unable to revive him.
In a message to the Marquette community, University President Kimo Ah Yun confirmed the victims were students. “We grieve with the students’ families and friends, as well as faculty, staff and fellow students here on campus who were touched by these students during their time in our community,” he said. “Such a loss is difficult to comprehend, and I know the coming days will be difficult for our community.”
The university has arranged support services, including counseling and pastoral care. A Mass of Remembrance will be held Saturday, September 6, at 1 p.m. in the Varsity Theatre, with additional gathering spaces available in the Lunda Room and Henke Lounge from noon to 3 p.m.
