Felipe Mancilla Obituary, Death – Ongoing Investigation in Hidalgo County

Authorities in Hidalgo County are investigating a violent series of events in rural Mission that began with a fatal shooting and ended hours later in an officer-involved incident.

According to the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), the chain of events started around 1:47 a.m. Saturday when deputies responded to the 2400 block of Venecia Street after reports of a man lying in the roadway with multiple gunshot wounds. Deputies attempted life-saving measures, but the victim, later identified as 36-year-old Felipe Mancilla, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary findings suggest Mancilla’s death may have been drug-related, though the investigation remains ongoing. Detectives worked overnight to identify a suspect, and by mid-morning, Sheriff Eddie Guerra confirmed that deputies and SWAT officers were serving a search warrant at a residence in Alton.

During the attempted arrest, the suspect reportedly opened fire, striking a deputy. Deputies returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect. The injured deputy was transported to the hospital and is recovering from non-life-threatening injuries.

Both Mancilla’s homicide and the officer-involved shooting remain under investigation as authorities work to determine the full circumstances. Sheriff Guerra praised his deputies’ swift response while acknowledging the risks faced in such dangerous operations.

For Mancilla’s loved ones, the tragedy brings profound grief, as detectives continue to search for answers in what led to his untimely death.
