In Loving Memory: James W. Bowie, 33, Fatally Struck While Riding Bicycle

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James W. Bowie, 33, of Covington, who tragically lost his life in a bicycle accident early Sunday, September 7, 2025, in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana.

According to Louisiana State Police, James was riding his bicycle north on Louisiana Highway 1081 near Smith Road when he was struck from behind by a 2019 Chevrolet Blazer at approximately 12:10 a.m. Despite the quick response of emergency personnel, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities reported that James was not wearing a helmet and his bicycle was not equipped with rear lights or reflectors at the time of the crash. Troopers collected a standard toxicology sample from James, while the driver of the SUV—who was properly restrained, uninjured, and showed no signs of impairment—voluntarily provided a breath sample below the legal limit.

James will be remembered as a beloved member of the Covington community whose presence will be deeply missed by family, friends, and all who knew him. His passing is a reminder of the importance of safety on the road for both cyclists and motorists alike.

Funeral arrangements for James W. Bowie will be announced by his family in the coming days.
