SUFFOLK, Va – Suffolk police are investigating a fatal crash that claimed the life of a young man late Saturday night.
According to officials, the accident happened around 9:40 p.m. in the 4900 block of Nansemond Parkway. Investigators determined that an SUV traveling along the roadway struck the back of a go-kart that was also in the travel lanes.
The driver of the go-kart was identified as 21-year-old Anton Smith. Despite immediate emergency response, Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not released details about the SUV driver, and no charges have been announced at this time.
Nansemond Parkway was shut down for nearly five hours while officers conducted their on-scene investigation and crews cleared the roadway. The busy corridor reopened to traffic in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The incident has left the Suffolk community shaken, raising concerns about safety on high-speed roadways and the dangers of smaller vehicles like go-karts sharing the road with standard passenger cars and trucks.
Police say the case remains an active investigation, and further details will be released as they become available.
