Beaufort County Authorities Identify Victim in Weekend Shooting

BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. – Officials have identified the young man killed in a weekend shooting on St. Helena Island. Coroner David Ott confirmed the victim as 20-year-old James Jenkins, a resident of the community.

The shooting occurred Sunday at a residence on 325 Ambrose Run, where emergency responders were dispatched after reports of gunfire. Jenkins was found with injuries consistent with a shooting and was transported to Beaufort Memorial Hospital. Despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead later that morning.

The Beaufort Police Department is leading the investigation. Detectives have not released details regarding suspects, motives, or the events leading up to the shooting, but say the case remains active. Investigators are gathering evidence, reviewing surveillance footage, and conducting interviews in hopes of bringing clarity to what happened.

Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing that community cooperation is critical in solving violent crimes. Tips may be submitted directly to the police department or anonymously.

“This was a tragic loss of a young life,” officials said, adding that every available resource is being used to bring answers and justice for Jenkins and his loved ones.

Coroner Ott confirmed Jenkins’s death was caused by gunshot injuries. Further forensic findings, including toxicology reports, may be released at a later stage in the investigation.

As the case continues, Beaufort Police have reassured the public that community safety remains a top priority and updates will be provided as new details emerge.
