BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Police are investigating a deadly shooting in Birmingham’s Graymont community late Tuesday night that claimed the life of 33-year-old Tedarius Montez Seawright.
Officers were dispatched around 11:50 p.m. to the 1400 block of 4th Court West, near Legion Field, after reports of a possible break-in and shooting. When they arrived, they found Seawright unresponsive on the ground, suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue crews attempted life-saving measures but pronounced him dead at the scene.
Investigators say the incident stemmed from an altercation between Seawright and a former friend. According to preliminary findings, the second man involved went to an apartment, where a heated confrontation broke out and escalated into gunfire.
The second man did not flee and was taken into custody at the scene without incident. Police transported him to headquarters for questioning, and he is currently being held under a standard 48-hour hold as detectives work to determine whether charges will be filed.
Authorities are still piecing together the sequence of events, examining evidence, and interviewing witnesses to establish whether the shooting was premeditated or a spontaneous escalation.
The Graymont community, already shaken by recent violence, expressed concern over yet another fatal shooting. Residents said they were startled by the sound of gunfire and the heavy police presence that followed late Tuesday night.
Seawright’s death marks another addition to Birmingham’s rising homicide count this year, highlighting the ongoing challenges of gun-related crime in the city.
