Morgan L. Wakefield – Mound City Man Dies in Allen County Crash

ALLEN COUNTY, Kan. – Authorities have identified 29-year-old Morgan L. Wakefield of Mound City as the man who died in a head-on collision Tuesday evening on U.S. Highway 169, about six miles south of Humboldt.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that the crash occurred just after 5:30 p.m. and involved a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by Wakefield, and a 2018 Ram 1500 pickup, driven by 52-year-old Shawn M. Petterborg of Stockton. Wakefield’s vehicle crossed the center line, colliding head-on with the pickup.

Emergency crews arrived quickly but were unable to save Wakefield, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials noted that he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Petterborg sustained injuries and was transported to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Three passengers in the Ram 1500—50-year-old Angie J. Hale, 31-year-old Caitlyn E. Hale, and a 9-year-old girl, all from Independence—also were injured and taken to Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center. All survived the collision.

The Kansas Highway Patrol continues to investigate what caused Wakefield’s vehicle to cross into oncoming traffic. Factors under review include driver distraction, impairment, fatigue, vehicle conditions, and roadway factors.

This tragedy highlights the importance of seat belt use, as proper restraint can significantly increase survival in severe crashes. U.S. Highway 169 is a heavily traveled route where head-on collisions have historically posed serious dangers.

The accident has left the Wakefield family and community mourning, while the injured passengers face recovery ahead. Authorities urge all drivers to remain alert, obey traffic laws, and always wear seat belts.

The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to determine the full circumstances that led to this deadly crash.
