PINSON, Ala — Authorities have confirmed that 23-year-old Gregory Douglas Harper of Pinson has died following a tragic single-vehicle crash in east Jefferson County.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office reported that Harper passed away at 2:35 a.m. Wednesday at UAB Hospital in Birmingham, where he had been taken after the wreck. Despite medical efforts, his injuries proved fatal.
Investigators say Harper was driving alone when his vehicle left the roadway in the 7100 block of Highway 79 in Pinson and struck a tree. No other vehicles were involved, and Harper was the only occupant.
At this time, officials have not released details on when the crash occurred or what caused the car to veer off the road. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the wreck.
Single-vehicle crashes often involve factors such as speed, fatigue, medical emergencies, or road conditions, though investigators have not indicated whether any of these contributed to this incident.
Harper’s passing has shaken the close-knit Pinson community, where residents expressed sadness at the loss of someone so young. His family has not yet released a public statement, but friends and loved ones are left grieving his sudden death.
The sheriff’s office is expected to share additional details as the investigation progresses. For now, Harper’s death serves as a solemn reminder of the risks drivers face, particularly during early-morning hours when conditions can be challenging.
