First Look at Suspect Accused of Shooting Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University Event

OREM, Utah  — Authorities have identified the man accused of opening fire during a speaking event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday as 57-year-old Ian Bruce Eckersley of Payson, Utah.

The incident occurred as Charlie Kirk, founder of the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA, was addressing attendees. Officials said a single round was fired, striking Kirk. He received immediate medical attention on-site before being transported for further treatment. His current condition has not been made public.

A university emergency alert confirmed that Eckersley was quickly taken into custody by campus and local police, preventing any additional injuries. Law enforcement emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the campus community.

Videos circulating online show the chaotic aftermath, with students and attendees rushing for cover as security teams responded.

The shooting has sparked national reaction. Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) wrote, “I am tracking the situation at Utah Valley University closely. Please join me in praying for Charlie Kirk and the students gathered there.” Vice President JD Vance also urged prayers, calling Kirk “a genuinely good guy and a young father.”

Investigators are working with federal partners, including the FBI and ATF, to determine a motive. Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses, and processing evidence from the scene.

The case remains under active investigation, with further updates expected in the coming days.
