Tragic Accident in South Phoenix: 5-Year-Old Layla Ramos Fatally Shot by 9-Year-Old Brother
PHOENIX, AZ — Heartbreak grips the South Phoenix community after a devastating and tragic incident claimed the life of 5-year-old Layla Ramos on Tuesday night, June 3, 2025. Phoenix police say the young girl was accidentally shot by her 9-year-old brother inside the family’s home near 7th Avenue and Broadway Road.
Officers initially responded to a stabbing call just after 9:00 p.m. in the area of 7th Avenue and Buckeye Road. They located the caller at a nearby behavioral hospital, where emergency staff were attempting to treat Layla, who had suffered a gunshot wound. Despite all efforts, she sadly succumbed to her injuries.
During the course of the investigation, authorities determined that Layla’s older brother had accidentally discharged a firearm inside the residence. The circumstances surrounding how the child gained access to the weapon are under active investigation.
Police also arrested the children’s father, who is a prohibited possessor, on charges of illegal firearm possession. The firearm involved in the incident was reportedly unsecured in the home at the time of the shooting.
Family members identified the victim as Layla Ramos, a sweet and loving little girl remembered for her gentle heart and radiant smile. “She was soft-hearted and so caring,” said a grieving relative in an interview with ABC15. “She loved everyone, and everyone loved her.”
This tragic event has prompted renewed concern and conversation around gun safety, particularly the dangers of unsecured firearms in homes with children. Authorities and community leaders are urging gun owners to practice responsible storage, keeping firearms locked and inaccessible to minors.
The investigation is ongoing. Meanwhile, the community continues to mourn the loss of a life taken far too soon. Support for the Ramos family is pouring in as they face an unimaginable loss.
