Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting at Garland Motel Leaves Two Dead

Garland, TX — A deadly standoff at a Garland motel on Wednesday afternoon has left two men dead, including the suspect, following an officer-involved shooting. The incident occurred at the Motel 6 located at 12721 LBJ Freeway, near Northwest Highway and Interstate 635.

At approximately 1:50 p.m. on June 4, Garland Police officers responded to reports of a disturbance between a hotel guest and staff. Upon arrival, officers made contact with the suspect, later identified as 52-year-old Shawn Dylan Burt of Hutchins, Texas. Burt reportedly brandished a firearm, prompting officers to take cover and request assistance.

The department’s SWAT team was called to the scene, and nearby motel rooms were evacuated for safety. A warrant was secured for Burt’s arrest, and trained negotiators attempted to establish communication with him. Despite their efforts, Burt remained unresponsive.

As the situation escalated, tear gas was deployed into the room to encourage the suspect to surrender. When SWAT officers approached the window, Burt allegedly aimed a firearm at a team member. A SWAT officer then discharged his weapon, fatally striking Burt.

Upon entering the room, officers found Burt deceased. Additionally, a second individual—identified as 69-year-old Donald Bailey Sr. of Dallas—was found dead inside. Preliminary investigations indicate Bailey may have been deceased for some time prior to the incident.

No officers were injured during the operation.

The Garland Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division is continuing to investigate the full circumstances surrounding the incident, including the events leading up to the fatal shooting and the death of the second individual.

Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the case to contact the Garland Police Department as the investigation remains ongoing.
