Catawba County Charges Two in Connection to Mass Shooting; One Suspect in Custody

CATAWBA COUNTY, NC — June 5, 2025, 3:00 PM The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office has charged two men in connection to a recent mass shooting that has shaken the community. Izaiah Kane Mitchell, 18, and Zachary Michael Bates, 22, both from Morganton, have been formally charged with one count each of Attempted First Degree Murder.

As of 3:40 PM, officials confirmed that Zachary Michael Bates has been arrested. Authorities continue their search for Mitchell, who remains at large.

These charges stem from an ongoing investigation tied to earlier arrests of suspects Garon Killian, Toland Huff, and Ke’andre Mack, who are also linked to the same violent incident. Law enforcement continues to treat Mitchell, Bates, and Huff as armed and dangerous, urging the public to exercise caution.

“We are asking the community to remain vigilant and report any information that may help us locate the remaining suspects,” said Major Aaron Turk, Public Information Officer for the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office.
