ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Authorities have identified the victim in a shocking St. Charles homicide as 16-year-old Carter Bennett, who police say was killed by his mother, 47-year-old Krista Roy.

According to the probable cause statement, welfare checks were requested at the family’s residence in the 3200 block of Lightfoot Drive on September 28 and 29 after friends and acquaintances became concerned about not hearing from Carter—a behavior they described as highly unusual.

When officers arrived, they detected a strong odor and later discovered Carter deceased in his bed. A search warrant revealed he had sustained multiple gunshot and stab wounds.

During questioning, Roy allegedly confessed to shooting her son multiple times as he slept, and then stabbing him after retrieving a knife from the kitchen. Detectives said she admitted to hearing her son cry out “Mommy” during the attack.

Investigators also learned that Roy had attempted suicide earlier on September 29. Friends told detectives that Carter “loved life” and was not suicidal, while also describing Roy as “strange” and uninvolved in her son’s life.

Roy has been charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. She is being held at the St. Charles County Jail on a $1,000,000 cash-only bond.

The investigation remains ongoing.
