MILWAUKEE, Wis. — The city of Milwaukee is mourning the tragic loss of Elijah Wilks, 26, a warehouse worker and lifelong Milwaukee resident, who was fatally shot on Thursday morning, October 9, 2025, near 49th and Mill by an off-duty Milwaukee Police Department officer.

According to authorities, the incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. during the officer’s commute after a rear-end collision sparked a verbal dispute that escalated violently. Law enforcement sources report that Wilks allegedly pistol-whipped the officer, prompting the officer to draw his service weapon, striking Wilks multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The off-duty officer, a 12-year veteran, sustained minor injuries from the altercation and was treated at a local hospital; he has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.

Wilks was remembered by friends and family as a devoted father, a generous friend, and a mentor in his community. Known for his easy smile and warm heart, he brought light to those around him. “Elijah was the guy who’d give you his last dollar,” one friend shared. Vigils have been held near the intersection, with community members coming together to honor his memory.

The Milwaukee Police Department continues to investigate, reviewing bodycam and dashcam footage. The case has been forwarded to the district attorney. Milwaukee stands united in grief, calling for reflection, de-escalation, and healing in the wake of this heartbreaking tragedy.
