PHENIX CITY, Ala. — A devastating overnight fire on Wehring Lane in Phenix City has claimed the lives of four family members, leaving the community in mourning.
According to Russell County Coroner Arthur Sumbry Jr., the victims have been identified as 77-year-old Willey Chappell, 70-year-old Sarah Chappell, 40-year-old Vantice Williams, and 6-year-old Paradise Williams. Authorities believe the preliminary cause of death was smoke inhalation, though the official cause will be determined following autopsies at the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery.
Emergency crews responded to the home after reports of a structure fire late Saturday night. When firefighters arrived, they discovered the bodies of the four victims inside the residence. Officials have not yet determined how the fire started, and the investigation remains ongoing.
