DURHAM COUNTY, N.C. — A woman was killed and her sister injured following a crash early Sunday morning on I-40 westbound near Page Road in Durham County.

According to the Durham Police Department, the crash happened around 4:45 a.m. when 24-year-old Brijette Basden of Kernersville pulled her Ford Fusion onto the left shoulder to switch driving duties with her sister, Asrael Basden.

While both women were standing outside the vehicle, a 2003 Toyota Camry traveling in the far-left lane struck them and their car. The impact caused the Camry to veer into another lane, where it was hit by a 2021 Toyota Camry.

Brijette Basden died at the scene, authorities said. Her sister, Asrael, was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, including a broken foot.

No other injuries were reported, and as of now, no charges have been filed. The crash remains under investigation.

All westbound lanes of I-40 were closed for several hours while investigators worked the scene. Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact Investigator G. Munter at 919-560-4935 ext. 29448 or reach out to Durham CrimeStoppers at 919-683-1200.
