78-Year-Old Driver Dies After Car Crashes Into Building in East El Paso

EL PASO, Texas  — A 78-year-old man died Monday afternoon after his car crashed into a building in East El Paso, authorities said.

The El Paso Police Department identified the victim as Luis Hernandez Vasquez. Police reported that Vasquez was driving a 2008 Nissan Sentra when he ran a stop sign at the intersection of Grover and Hawkins. The vehicle struck a center median, which caused it to launch into a building.

Emergency responders transported Vasquez to a local hospital with serious injuries. However, the El Paso Medical Examiner’s Office later notified investigators that he had succumbed to his injuries.

Police have not released details on what caused Vasquez to run the stop sign, and the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities continue to examine the scene and gather information to determine the exact circumstances that led to the crash.

According to police statistics, Vasquez’s death marks the 52nd traffic-related fatality in El Paso in 2025, compared to 55 at the same point last year.

The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers of driving and the importance of traffic safety, particularly for intersections and areas with medians. Community members expressed shock over the crash, as it highlights the unpredictable nature of roadway accidents and the impact they have on families and the local community.
