Teen Girl and Man Dead in Algiers Shooting, Authorities Say

NEW ORLEANS — A tragic shooting in Algiers Wednesday morning has claimed the lives of 16-year-old Lizzell Palma and a 20-year-old man, according to the New Orleans Police Department.

Police say they received the initial call around 7:45 a.m. and responded to the scene shortly after 8 a.m. Investigators have confirmed that the incident was a murder-suicide, marking the fifth such case in New Orleans since September 25, according to the Metropolitan Crime Commission.

Authorities report that Lizzell Palma, a junior at Walter L. Cohen High School, was walking to her bus stop when she was followed and shot by the 20-year-old man, who later turned the gun on himself. Palma was pronounced dead at the scene, while the man was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.

The school issued a statement announcing it would be closed for the day following the tragedy and expressed condolences to Palma’s family. Friends and classmates described her as a bright and promising young student whose sudden death has left the community in shock.
