MILLSBORO, Del. — Community is mourning the loss of 73-year-old Gary Cooney of Millsboro, who tragically passed away from injuries sustained in a car accident on October 24, 2025, along Millsboro Highway. According to Delaware State Police, the crash occurred just past Mumford Road around 11 a.m. when two vehicles collided during a failed passing attempt.

Authorities say a Mazda had stopped on Millsboro Highway, preparing to turn left into a private driveway, when an Oldsmobile traveling behind it tried to pass on the left. As the Mazda began its turn, the Oldsmobile swerved off the road, struck two garbage cans, and then crashed into the left side of the Mazda. The violent impact pushed the Mazda into a nearby tree.

Gary Cooney, who was a passenger in the Mazda, was rushed to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. Despite wearing a seatbelt and receiving immediate medical attention, he sadly succumbed to his injuries the following morning, October 25. His wife, the 69-year-old driver of the Mazda, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated and released from the hospital.

The driver of the Oldsmobile, a 34-year-old man from Millsboro, was reportedly unharmed and is cooperating with investigators. Delaware State Police closed the roadway for several hours as the Collision Reconstruction Unit processed the scene and continues to investigate the circumstances that led to the tragic accident.

Gary Cooney is remembered by family, friends, and neighbors as a kind, humble, and gentle man who always brought warmth to those around him. His passing has left a deep void in the Millsboro community. As the investigation continues, loved ones ask for privacy and prayers while they grieve this heartbreaking loss.
