EFFINGHAM COUNTY, Ga. — The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a tragic single-vehicle crash that claimed the life of 34-year-old Jacob Lane on Friday night, Oct. 24.
According to officials, deputies were dispatched to the scene shortly before 9 p.m. after receiving reports of a crash on Blue Jay Road near Finch Lane. Investigators say Lane was driving westbound when his vehicle veered off the right side of the roadway, crossed over Finch Lane, and struck a utility pole.
Emergency responders arrived quickly, but Lane succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Authorities confirmed that he was the sole occupant of the vehicle at the time of the crash.
In a heartbreaking but heartwarming discovery, deputies later learned that one of Lane’s dogs, Roxy, had been in the vehicle during the crash. A Good Samaritan who came upon the wreck found and cared for Roxy until she could be safely reunited with Lane’s family. The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office publicly thanked the individual for their kindness and compassion during such a difficult time.
Investigators have not yet determined what caused Lane to lose control of his vehicle. The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Enforcement Unit continues to review evidence from the scene, including road conditions and possible mechanical or medical factors.
The roadway was temporarily closed while crews worked to clear the area and restore power to affected homes after the utility pole was struck.
The sheriff’s office expressed its condolences to Lane’s family and friends, describing the incident as a tragic reminder of how quickly accidents can occur. The investigation remains ongoing.
