HAMILTON, ON — Police have identified a 17-year-old suspect believed to be responsible for a brazen double shooting that tragically claimed the life of an innocent bystander in downtown Hamilton over the weekend.
The incident occurred just before 5:30 p.m. near the Jackson Square shopping centre, in the area of King Street East between MacNab and James streets. According to Hamilton Police, the teenage suspect — identified as Mackale Lavoie — allegedly met with three individuals in the downtown core, believed to be his intended targets.
Investigators say Lavoie opened fire during the encounter, striking one of the individuals. In the ensuing chaos, he continued to shoot and fatally wounded 26-year-old Belinda Sarodie, an innocent bystander who happened to be nearby. The suspect then fled the area on foot, heading northbound on James Street.
Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene and found two victims. The male victim, one of the intended targets, sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. Tragically, Belinda Sarodie was pronounced dead on scene.
Hamilton Police have obtained a judicial order allowing for the public release of the suspect’s identity, despite his status as a youth under the law. Mackale Lavoie is currently wanted on charges of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.
As of now, Lavoie remains at large. Authorities are urging anyone who may see him or knows of his whereabouts to avoid approaching and instead contact Hamilton Police Service immediately at 905-546-4925 or call 9-1-1.
“This was a senseless act of violence that has devastated a family and shaken our community,” police said. The investigation remains ongoing, and officers continue to canvass the area for surveillance footage and witnesses.
Anyone with information is also encouraged to call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 or submit a tip online.
As the community reels from this heartbreaking loss, police are determined to bring the suspect to justice and prevent further harm.
