MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — A Miami Beach police officer has tragically died following a motorcycle crash on Interstate 75 near Gratigny Parkway in Hialeah Gardens, authorities confirmed Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred at approximately 11:25 a.m., prompting the closure of all northbound lanes. Emergency responders rushed to the scene and transported the officer, later identified as 33-year-old Officer David Cajuso, by air ambulance to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Officer Cajuso, described by Miami Beach Police Chief Wayne Jones as a “decorated hero,” had served the department for 10 years. Chief Jones called for prayers for Cajuso’s wife and their three young children during a press conference outside the hospital. “This is a sad and dark day for the men of the Miami Beach Police Department,” Jones said, expressing gratitude to the numerous officers from across South Florida who gathered to honor Cajuso.
Following the press conference, a solemn procession was held outside the hospital as officers saluted while Cajuso’s body was transported to the medical examiner’s office. In a moment of tribute, Chief Jones handed Cajuso’s wife an American flag, symbolizing her husband’s service and sacrifice. Steadman Stahl, president of the South Florida Police Benevolent Association, remarked, “It does not matter whose badge or patch you wear. We all come together. We all mourn together.”
The Florida Highway Patrol is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. Chief Jones emphasized that while details remain limited, the priority at this time is supporting Officer Cajuso’s family and honoring his memory.
The loss of Officer Cajuso has deeply affected the Miami Beach Police Department and the broader law enforcement community. Known for his dedication, bravery, and service, Cajuso leaves behind a grieving family and a legacy of commitment to protecting and serving the community. As South Florida mourns, colleagues and residents alike are remembering him not only as an officer but as a devoted father, husband, and hero.
