TUCSON, Ariz. — Heartbreak has struck the University of Arizona community after a devastating hit-and-run crash near 2nd Street and Euclid Avenue late Thursday night claimed the lives of two students, Sophia Troetel and Josiah Santos, and seriously injured another, Katya Castillo-Mendoza.

According to the Tucson Police Department (TPD), the collision occurred around 11 p.m., when a vehicle struck the three students and fled the scene. Authorities confirmed that the 19-year-old suspected driver believed to be involved in the fatal crash has since been detained.

The University of Arizona released a heartfelt statement expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy:

“The University of Arizona community is deeply saddened by the collision that tragically claimed the lives of two of our students, Sophia Troetel and Josiah Santos, and seriously injured another, Katya Castillo-Mendoza. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and all grieving those who lost their lives, and our support to the injured student and their loved ones. The university is providing direct support and resources to students, faculty, and staff affected by this tragic event.”

The loss of Sophia and Josiah has left classmates, professors, and friends devastated, describing them as bright, driven, and kind-hearted individuals who brought joy to every space they entered. Katya remains in the hospital receiving treatment for serious injuries as the community rallies around her with prayers and support.

As the investigation continues, the University of Arizona is urging students to seek emotional support during this painful time. Counseling & Psych Services (CAPS) offers 24/7 mental health and crisis support at 520-621-3334, or students may visit CAPS in person during business hours.

The entire Tucson and University of Arizona community now mourns together — united in grief, love, and remembrance of two young lives gone too soon, and holding hope for Katya’s recovery.
