MILWAUKEE, WI — A night meant for celebration turned into heartbreak early Saturday morning when gunfire erupted near the 600 block of North Water Street, a popular entertainment district in downtown Milwaukee. The 12:02 a.m. shooting left two men dead and three others wounded, prompting grief, outrage, and renewed calls for change.
The victims have been identified as 52-year-old Antwan Hogans, known lovingly as “Tweezy”, and 39-year-old Kevin Lewis, known to many as “Bubbs.” Both men were well-known in the community, their deaths sending shockwaves through family, friends, and longtime acquaintances.
Three other individuals—ages 30, 32, and 34—were rushed to the hospital with gunshot wounds. Thankfully, authorities report they are expected to survive.
“This isn’t just violence. It’s devastation,” said Hyacinth Nembhardt, owner of Tropic on Water, a local business near the scene. “The sad reality is we have families dealing with tragic loss, and we need to prevent it from happening in the future.”
Nembhardt said her establishment was packed with customers when the shooting occurred, and the fallout was immediate. “People ran, some screamed. The mood shifted instantly. We had to shut down,” she shared. “It’s not just about the loss of business—it’s about the fear this puts into our community.”
Tyreese Evans, a patron who personally knew one of the victims, fought back tears as he reflected on the violence. “I cried. I know Tweezy—that’s my friend,” Evans said. “Ain’t no more fighting now. They’re just shooting. Bullets don’t have a name.”
The shooting has reignited concerns about safety in Milwaukee’s nightlife areas and the city’s ongoing struggle with gun violence. Police continue to investigate and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
As candles are lit and loved ones gather to mourn Tweezy and Bubbs, the call for justice and community accountability grows louder. These were not just names on a report — they were fathers, friends, brothers, and sons.
