CLEVELAND, Ohio — Authorities are investigating a tragic crash that claimed the life of 51-year-old Raid Yamil Elabd of Lakewood on Saturday. Police believe the incident may have been caused by a medical emergency prior to the collision.
According to the Cleveland Division of Police, the crash occurred just before noon near the intersection of Puritas Avenue and West 192nd Street. Investigators say Elabd was traveling east on Puritas Avenue in an SUV when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle suddenly veered off the roadway.
The SUV first struck a car that was stopped in the westbound lane, then continued moving east before hitting an embankment. The impact caused the vehicle to go airborne, striking a parked car before coming to rest. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but despite their efforts, Raid Yamil Elabd was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the first vehicle struck was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation. Their condition has not been disclosed, though authorities say their injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the possibility that Elabd suffered a medical episode before losing control of the SUV. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Elabd’s identity and will assist in determining his official cause of death.
This tragic incident has left family, friends, and community members in mourning. Those who knew Raid Elabd describe him as a kind, hardworking man whose presence brought warmth to those around him.
As the investigation continues, Cleveland police are reminding drivers to stay alert for unexpected roadway emergencies and to seek medical attention promptly if experiencing symptoms while driving.
