Hannibal, MO — The Hannibal community is mourning the sudden and tragic loss of Jeffrey Nichols, 61, of Hannibal, who was killed in a heartbreaking accident on Highway 61 early Tuesday morning. Marion County Coroner Rick Jones confirmed that Nichols was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Justin Dunn, the accident occurred around 5 a.m. Nichols had been riding his bicycle near County Road 409 when he struck debris on the shoulder of the highway, causing him to be ejected from his bike. Tragically, he was then struck by an 18-wheeler. The driver of the truck reportedly swerved in an attempt to avoid Nichols but was unable to prevent the collision.
