Community Mourns the Loss of Burnie Ray Townsend, 52, in Dillon Shooting

DILLON, S.C. — The Dillon County Coroner’s Office has identified 52-year-old Burnie Ray Townsend of Dillon as the victim of a fatal shooting that occurred Monday morning, November 3, 2025.

According to Coroner Donnie Grimsley, the shooting happened around 8 a.m. during an altercation at the 24 Hour Spot on Highway 301 in Dillon. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Townsend suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite emergency efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after.

Dillon Police Chief David Lane confirmed that investigators have identified a person of interest, though no names have been released as the investigation remains ongoing.

Those who knew Burnie describe him as a kind-hearted, genuine man who was a familiar and friendly face in the community. Dorian Thomas, manager of the 24 Hour Spot, said Townsend stopped by every morning and often helped around the store with whatever was needed.

“It was devastating, I couldn’t believe it was him,” Thomas said. “I couldn’t believe — what could he have done to draw somebody to do that to him? It hurt my heart.”

Townsend’s tragic death has left family, friends, and neighbors heartbroken as they struggle to comprehend the loss of someone who gave so much of himself to others. The community remembers him as a hardworking, dependable, and selfless man whose kindness touched many lives.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
