WICHITA, Kan — Two Kansas residents have lost their lives following a devastating crash Monday morning on Interstate 70 in Wabaunsee County.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP), the crash occurred around 11:30 a.m. when a Jeep Liberty, traveling eastbound on I-70, veered into the median for reasons still under investigation. The vehicle struck a culvert, causing it to overturn and collide with a Peterbilt semitrailer that was entering the interstate from an on-ramp.

The driver of the Jeep, 63-year-old Cheryl A. Martin, and her passenger, 65-year-old Perry A. Martin, both of Junction City, were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed that both victims were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

The driver of the semi-truck was not injured.

Eastbound lanes of I-70 were shut down for several hours as troopers conducted their investigation and cleared the scene. The Kansas Highway Patrol continues to examine the circumstances surrounding the accident, including what may have caused the Jeep to leave its lane.

Friends and neighbors describe Cheryl and Perry Martin as a devoted couple who shared a deep love for one another and their community. Their sudden passing has left family, friends, and the Junction City community heartbroken.

The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities are urging drivers to stay alert and cautious, particularly when merging or entering high-speed roadways.

💐 Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the Martin family and all those affected by this tragic loss.
