With deep sadness, the Port St. Lucie community is mourning the loss of 35-year-old Richard Kenneth Douglas Willis, who died following a devastating collision involving his electric bicycle and a pickup truck Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Port St. Lucie Police Department, the crash happened shortly after noon on November 11 at the intersection of Northeast Floresta Drive and Northeast Airoso Boulevard. Investigators said Willis was riding his electric bicycle southbound along the east sidewalk of Airoso Boulevard when tragedy struck.

A 2018 Dodge Ram pickup truck, towing a 2021 flat utility trailer carrying a skid steer, was traveling west on Floresta Drive. As the driver made a right turn onto Airoso Boulevard, Willis’s e-bike appeared to lose control while navigating the curve, veering off course and striking the metal loading ramp on the rear passenger side of the trailer.

The impact threw Willis from his bike, causing severe injuries. Emergency crews arrived quickly and transported him to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce, where he was later pronounced deceased despite all life-saving efforts.

Police confirmed that the driver of the pickup truck remained at the scene and cooperated fully with investigators. At this time, no charges or citations have been issued. Witnesses told investigators that Willis’s electric bike seemed to be traveling around 30 miles per hour before the collision — a factor that may have contributed to the difficulty of safely maneuvering the turn.

The Traffic Homicide Investigation Unit is continuing to examine all aspects of the incident, including roadway design, visibility, and environmental conditions at the time of the crash. Officials are also reviewing nearby surveillance footage and speaking with witnesses to gain a clearer understanding of what happened.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has video footage from the area to contact Officer Brian Thompson at 772-871-5001, or to reach out anonymously through Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at 800-273-8477.

The heartbreaking loss of Richard Willis has left family, friends, and neighbors in mourning. Those who knew him describe him as a kind, genuine man with a big heart and a warm spirit — someone who always had a smile to share and kindness to give.

“This is such a tragic loss,” one local resident said. “You never expect something like this to happen in your neighborhood. Everyone’s thoughts are with his family.”

Community members have expressed growing concern about the safety of e-bike riders on busy roadways like Floresta Drive and Airoso Boulevard, where traffic congestion and tight intersections can make navigation challenging.

In response, police are urging both cyclists and drivers to remain cautious, especially at intersections and turns, where most accidents occur. Officials emphasized that while electric bicycles offer convenience and speed, they also require heightened awareness and responsible operation.

The Port St. Lucie Police Department extended heartfelt condolences to Richard’s family and friends, calling the incident a tragic reminder of how fragile life can be. They also asked the public to avoid speculation as the investigation continues, assuring the community that all facts will be carefully reviewed before any conclusions are reached.

As loved ones grieve, tributes are pouring in for Richard Kenneth Douglas Willis — a man remembered for his gentle nature, his love for life, and the warmth he brought to everyone around him.

May his memory live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, and may this tragedy serve as a reminder of the importance of safety, awareness, and compassion on the roads we all share.
