RICHMOND, Va. — The Richmond Police Department Crash Team has identified the motorcyclist killed in a crash Tuesday afternoon on South Belvidere Street as 21-year-old Alexander Norton of North Chesterfield.
Authorities say the collision happened around 3:59 p.m. at the intersection of South Belvidere and Spring Streets. When officers arrived, they found that a motorcycle and an SUV had collided in the middle of the intersection.
Norton was transported to a nearby hospital with critical injuries but later succumbed to his injuries. The adult male driver of the SUV was not injured and remained at the scene to cooperate with investigators.
According to the initial investigation, Norton reportedly disregarded a red traffic signal and attempted to turn left onto South Belvidere Street from Spring Street as the SUV was entering the intersection from the southbound lane. The two vehicles collided violently, causing severe damage to the motorcycle and significant impact to the SUV.
Investigators continue to piece together the events leading up to the crash. At this time, no charges have been filed.
