SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Springfield community is grieving after a tragic shooting late Wednesday night claimed the life of a young man and left a woman injured at The 505 Apartment Complex on East St. Louis Street, just north of the Discovery Center.
According to the Springfield Police Department (SPD), officers responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 11:21 p.m. Upon arrival, police discovered two victims — a woman outside the building suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and a man, later identified as Xay Xay, who was found deceased on the fourth floor of the complex.
Authorities believe both victims were in their twenties. The woman was transported to a local hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.
The 505 Apartment Complex, which primarily serves students, quickly became the scene of a heavy police presence as investigators worked through the night to gather evidence and interview witnesses.
Residents described the chaotic moments after the gunfire rang out. “I didn’t really know what was going on. I had no clue — I called my roommate, and then he told me what was happening. It was pretty crazy,” said Malachi Vincent, a resident of The 505.
Detectives are still piecing together the events that led to the shooting and whether the victims knew the suspect. As of Thursday morning, no arrests have been made, and police continue searching for the individual responsible.
“This is a heartbreaking loss for our city,” an SPD spokesperson said. “We are working tirelessly to bring justice to the victim and closure to his loved ones.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Springfield Police Department or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
💔 As the investigation continues, the Springfield community unites in grief and remembrance of Xay Xay, a young life taken far too soon. May his family and friends find strength and comfort during this difficult time.
