CHARLES COUNTY CRASH | Chester Man Killed in Tragic Collision with Freightliner Truck

CHARLES COUNTY, Md. — A devastating crash on U.S. Route 301 claimed the life of a young man from Chester, Maryland, and has prompted a detailed investigation by state and local authorities.

Andrew Ring, 26, was pronounced dead at the scene after the vehicle he was driving collided with the back of a freightliner truck on Tuesday afternoon. According to Maryland State Police (MSP), Ring was operating a Subaru Legacy that, for reasons still under investigation, failed to slow down and struck the rear of a semi-trailer stopped in traffic.

The crash occurred at approximately 2:43 p.m. on the northbound side of Route 301, just south of Route 257. The freightliner truck was being operated by 55-year-old Otis Coates, of College Park, who remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

Due to the severity and circumstances surrounding the collision, a specialized crash reconstruction team was dispatched. The MSP Crash Team, along with the Maryland State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division and Charles County Sheriff’s Office, are actively working to determine the cause of the fatal impact.

Authorities have not yet determined why Ring did not brake or take evasive action before the collision. Investigators are examining all possible factors, including vehicle condition, roadway circumstances, and driver behavior.

Maryland State Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or may have relevant information to come forward. Witnesses can contact TFC A. Sabock at the MSP La Plata Barrack by calling (301) 392-1200 or emailing ashley.sabock@maryland.gov.

As the community mourns the sudden loss of Andrew Ring, the investigation continues in hopes of bringing clarity to the tragic event.Aa
