In Memory of EJ Rotherham
Assistant Principal, Mentor, Friend
It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of EJ Rotherham, longtime Assistant Principal at Agnes Stewart Middle School. EJ passed away peacefully in his sleep over Memorial Day weekend.
A founding staff member of ASMS in 1998, EJ was more than an educator—he was the heart of the school. For over 25 years, he brought energy, laughter, and compassion to everything he did. His dedication to students, staff, and families was unwavering, and his presence left an indelible mark on the Springfield community.
“EJ was the foundation and heart of Agnes Stewart Middle School,” said Principal Kevin Wright. “He brought his iconic energy, smile, and laugh to every task, and made everyone feel welcome.”
Known for his silly humor, kind heart, and fierce commitment to student success, EJ helped shape the culture of ASMS from the very beginning. His legacy is one of inclusion, support, and joy—a legacy that lives on in the thousands of students and colleagues he inspired over the years.
To help students and staff process this difficult loss, support services—including counselors, psychologists, and therapy animals—will be available at ASMS beginning today.
We extend our deepest condolences to EJ’s family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the honor of knowing him. His memory will continue to guide and uplift us, just as he always did in life.
EJ Rotherham will be dearly missed—but never forgotten.
