ELKHORN CITY, Ky. — Authorities have identified the body found Thursday night in the Russell Fork River as Zack Mullins, a 19-year-old recent graduate of Hurley High School in Grundy, Virginia. The heartbreaking discovery was made around 9 p.m. by Millard Fire & Rescue crews responding to the scene in Pike County.
Pike County Coroner Kevin Hall confirmed Mullins’ identity and noted that the young man had graduated just this year with the Class of 2025. Known for his role on the Hurley High School football team, Mullins was a well-liked student and athlete with plans to become a coal miner after graduation — a goal he proudly shared in his senior spotlight.
At this time, authorities have not released details regarding the events leading up to Mullins’ death. His body has been transported to the Kentucky Medical Examiner’s Office, where an autopsy will be conducted. The case is being actively investigated by the Kentucky State Police.
The community of Grundy and the surrounding areas are reeling from the sudden loss of a young life full of promise.
