San Marcos Community Grieves After Deadly Shooting Claims Two Lives; One Arrest Made

SAN MARCOS, TX — The community of San Marcos is reeling after a tragic and violent shooting in the early hours of Saturday, July 19, 2025, left two young men dead and another injured. The incident, which occurred shortly after midnight, has shaken residents and prompted an outpouring of grief, support, and calls for peace.

According to the San Marcos Police Department, officers responded to reports of gunfire near a residential area and discovered multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the swift efforts of emergency responders, 24-year-old Anthony Barrera was pronounced dead at the scene. Another victim, whose identity has not yet been released, later succumbed to injuries at the hospital. A third male victim is currently recovering and listed in stable condition.

In connection with the shooting, authorities have arrested 18-year-old Jermiah Jayden Tobias, who now faces charges related to the fatal incident. Police have not yet disclosed a motive but confirmed the investigation is ongoing.

“This is a heartbreaking loss for the families involved and for our entire city,” said San Marcos Police Chief Stan Standridge. “Our officers are working diligently to ensure justice is served and that those affected have the support they need.”

As the community grapples with the senseless violence, tributes and memorials for the victims are emerging throughout the city. Friends and family members of Anthony Barrera remember him as a kind-hearted young man with a generous spirit and a love for music and family.

“He had such a bright light in him,” one friend shared. “Anthony didn’t deserve this — none of them did.”

Local churches and support organizations are offering counseling services and organizing vigils to honor the lives lost. City leaders are also urging residents to remain united in the face of tragedy.
