SOUTH BEND, IN — Authorities have identified the motorcyclist who tragically lost his life in an early morning crash on the south side of South Bend as 61-year-old Grant Burkett, a longtime resident of the city.
The fatal incident occurred around 4:45 a.m., just south of Ireland Road. According to police, Burkett was riding westbound on the Bypass when he attempted to exit northbound onto Michigan Street. During the maneuver, he veered off the roadway and crashed on Michigan Street.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but despite their efforts, Burkett was pronounced dead as a result of the injuries sustained in the crash.
The accident caused significant traffic delays, with northbound access from the Bypass to Michigan Street closed for several hours while authorities conducted their investigation and cleared the scene.
Grant Burkett’s sudden passing has left his loved ones and the South Bend community in mourning. Known for his friendly nature and love of the open road, Burkett’s loss is deeply felt by all who knew him.
The investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing. Authorities have not released any further details at this time.
