Daniel L. Westrich, 27, of Canton, Tragically Killed in Interstate Incident Involving OSHP Cruiser

CANTON, OH — Daniel L. Westrich, 27, of Canton, tragically lost his life early Sunday morning, July 20, 2025, after being struck by a vehicle belonging to the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) on Interstate 71 in Medina County.

According to an official news release from OSHP, troopers had been dispatched around 4:45 a.m. in response to reports of a pedestrian walking in the northbound lanes of I-71, between State Route 83 and the I-76 interchange in Westfield Township.

At approximately 5:00 a.m., while patrolling the area, a marked OSHP cruiser struck Westrich. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other injuries were reported, and the incident is currently under investigation by the appropriate authorities to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.

Daniel’s sudden passing has left his family and friends in deep sorrow. Known to his loved ones as kind, quiet, and thoughtful, his life ended far too soon under tragic and unexpected circumstances.
