In Loving Memory of Anthony Barrera & Alek Pacheco

It is with deep sorrow and overwhelming grief that we share the tragic loss of Anthony Barrera, 24, and Alek Pacheco, 20, whose lives were senselessly taken during a violent incident in Downtown San Marcos in the early morning hours of Saturday, July 19, 2025.

The San Marcos Police Department responded to a distressing call at approximately 1:30 a.m., initially reported as a stabbing near a local downtown bar. Upon arrival, officers discovered that both Anthony and Alek had sustained fatal gunshot wounds to the head. Anthony Barrera was pronounced deceased at the scene. Alek Pacheco was transported to Christus Santa Rosa Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead at 2:15 a.m. A third individual was also injured in the shooting but survived after being treated for a gunshot wound to the foot.

This act of violence stemmed from a confrontation that began inside the bar and escalated outside at the intersection of East San Antonio Street and Guadalupe Street. According to police, tensions rose when Anthony Barrera, who was reportedly in a relationship with a woman still legally married, was confronted by her husband. The situation escalated, involving additional individuals, including someone who forcibly removed a necklace from Barrera—prompting a physical altercation that ultimately led to the fatal gunfire.

Authorities have arrested Jermiah Jayden Tobias, 19, on two counts of capital murder and one count of aggravated assault. His bail has been set at $1.65 million. Additionally, a 16-year-old male was taken into custody Saturday evening in connection with a previous aggravated robbery. Police are actively searching for Avery Saul Bowman, 19, believed to be connected to the incident, as well as a witness who may have recorded critical footage of the shooting.

Anthony and Alek were young men with their lives ahead of them. Anthony was known for his warm, loyal spirit and strong sense of family. Alek was remembered by friends for his easy smile, quiet strength, and generous heart. Their tragic and untimely deaths have left a void that can never be filled, and their families, friends, and the San Marcos community are now left to mourn the loss of two lives ended far too soon.

As the investigation continues, anyone with information is urged to contact the San Marcos Police Department.

May justice be served. And may the memories of Anthony Barrera and Alek Pacheco live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved them.

Rest in peace, Anthony and Alek. Your light remains.
