The city of New York is mourning the heartbreaking and untimely loss of Kevin Cruickshank, a 55-year-old Morningside Heights resident who was tragically killed on Saturday morning, July 19, 2025, in a devastating crash in Chinatown.
Kevin was doing what he loved—riding his bicycle—when his life was suddenly taken. According to police, the crash occurred when a driver speeding off the Manhattan Bridge in a Chevy Malibu lost control, striking Kevin as he cycled and a 63-year-old woman, May Kwok of Brooklyn, who had been sitting on a nearby bench. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
The collision left a path of destruction, with witnesses reporting the car barreling through the intersection at a dangerously high speed. The vehicle also struck a parked NYPD van and crashed into a nearby jewelry store. The driver and passenger attempted to flee on foot but were apprehended by authorities just a block away.
Kevin was widely known in his neighborhood for his love of cycling. He could often be seen returning from long rides, energized by the city he loved and the simple joy of being outdoors. His family, grieving an unimaginable loss, shared that he died “doing something he loved”—a small comfort in the face of overwhelming tragedy.
More than just a cyclist, Kevin was a beloved son, neighbor, and friend. He had served as the president of his housing co-op, where his leadership and kindness left a lasting mark. Those who knew him describe a man of great integrity, deep compassion, and an ever-present smile—a person who made others feel welcome and valued.
Kevin Cruickshank’s death is not only a loss for his loved ones but for the broader community who knew and admired him. His legacy will live on in the memories of weekend rides, neighborhood meetings, and quiet acts of kindness that defined his life. He is deeply missed and will never be forgotten.
In honor of Kevin, may we all take a moment to treasure the simple joys, hold our loved ones close, and advocate for safer streets—so others may not suffer the same loss.
