The Authorities have identified 26-year-old Christopher Martin-Holmes as the individual fatally shot by law enforcement following a police chase that ended in gunfire in Twiggs County, Georgia.

The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Friday on Interstate 16 West, according to a statement from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). Deputies from the Twiggs County Sheriff’s Office had attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation when the suspects, Martin-Holmes and 23-year-old Phillip Ellison Jr., fled, leading to a high-speed pursuit.

The chase concluded near Exit 12 when the fleeing vehicle crashed. As deputies approached, shots were reportedly fired from inside the vehicle. In response, a deputy returned fire, striking Martin-Holmes. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His body has since been transported to the GBI Crime Lab in Macon for autopsy.

Ellison was taken into custody without incident and is currently facing charges of aggravated assault. He remains in custody at the Twiggs County Jail. No deputies were injured in the exchange.

Investigators have not released specific details about the initial reason for the traffic stop or what prompted the suspects’ decision to flee. The GBI continues to lead the investigation to ensure a comprehensive and impartial review of the officer-involved shooting.

This case is among a series of recent police pursuits in Georgia that have ended with the use of deadly force. As the investigation continues, officials urge anyone with information to contact the GBI or the Twiggs County Sheriff’s Office.
